Guidelines for charging fees for student resources

The Federal Government stipulates that ‘students generally must be able to complete the requirements of their course of study without the imposition of fees that are additional to student contribution amounts or tuition fees’.

In relation to study materials, this means the University cannot charge students for resources essential to their course of study, unless those materials are also readily available at no additional cost to students in some other way (i.e. CloudDeakin, Library, etc.).

Prescribed textbooks are exempt because students can elect to not purchase the textbook and instead use the library copy. The library has electronic copies of many textbooks which can be used by Deakin students at no cost.

It is therefore important that you do not create resources and/or activities that require students to purchase resources. If you are unclear about this, you should discuss the matter with your Director of Teaching.
