Presentation and Demonstration: Increasing students’ academic performance and engagement through push notifications, digital badges and leaderboards: Is there an app for that

A combined BCEL (Building Capacity for Enhanced Learning) and BER@D (Business Education Research at Deakin) presentation and demonstration by Professor Dan Hunter, Foundation Dean, Swinburne Law School and Dr Grainne Oates, Senior Lecturer, Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Swinburne Business School:
The presentation is based on Quitch – an innovative mobile app with various gamification elements to enhance the first-year student experience. The app has now been adopted in several universities with student feedback being very positive. The presenters will discuss their research findings on its impact on students’ academic performance and engagement as well as providing hands-on demonstration of the mobile app.

He has taught at QUT Law School, the University of Melbourne Law School, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Cambridge University, Deakin University, and New York Law School, where he is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law.
Professor Hunter regularly publishes on the theory of intellectual property and on the intersection of computers and law. His most recent books have been The Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law: Intellectual Property (OUP, 2012), Amateur Media (Routledge, 2012) and two books on gamification, The Gamification Toolkit (Wharton Digital, 2015) and For The Win (Wharton Digital, 2012) (the latter of which has been translated into Russian, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Japanese).
His work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Joyce Foundation and the Australian Research Council. He has been a judge for the resolution of domain name disputes for the World Intellectual Property Organization and is the recipient of a Fulbright Postgraduate Fellowship, a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, a Smithsonian Fellowship, an American Council of Learned Societies Research Fellowship, a Herchel Smith Research Fellowship in Intellectual Property Law, and a Science Commons Fellowship.
His research is focused on cultural histories of intellectual property in the postwar period, including work on LEGO bricks, Barbie dolls, modernist furniture, and the social significance of luxury handbags.
Dr. Grainne Oates – Senior Lecturer, Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Swinburne Business School
Dr Grainne Oates is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at Swinburne University of Technology. She specialises in teaching introductory and management accounting at undergraduate and post graduate levels. Her primary research interests are decision-making in local government, including how the quality of councillors impact on performance, both environmental performance and also on the quality of accounting earnings of local governments. Grainne also publishes on topics relating to learning and teaching with a special focus on teaching innovations to enhance the student experience and learning outcomes. She recently developed an app with various gamification elements to enhance the first year student experience. The app has now been adopted in a number of other disciplines across the University. Student feedback has been very positive. Grainne is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Contemporary Issues in Business and Government (JCIBG). Prior to joining academia Grainne had a successful 13 year career in the pharmaceutical industry working for CSL.
