Assessment Design Workshop: Embedded Assessment for Higher Education
Yoon Jeon ‘YJ” is an international academic from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As part of her visitation with the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning in October 2017, she will share her research on embedded assessment design via this workshop.
Embedded assessment broadly refers to performance-based assessment using authentic and complex problems that require multiple competencies. These problems are seamlessly woven into the learning environment so that inferences about students’ learning can be made without interrupting the flow of learning. At The MIT Teaching Systems Lab, I have been expanding my prior work in the field of game- and simulation-based assessment to support teachers’ classroom assessment practices by creating meaningful and playful assessment toolkits that can be embedded within student learning experiences.
The process of designing embedded assessment involves (a) rapidly designing an authentic task, (b) testing with learners to refine the interactions and evidence generation, and (c) aligning evidence generated with the features of tasks and competencies (skills and knowledge). In this workshop, I will introduce this agile design process informed by the evidence-centered design framework (Mislevy, Steinberg, & Almond, 2003) and participants will engage in the hands-on experience of evidence-centered design while exploring design principles for playful authentic assessment.
YJ is a Research Scientist with the Teaching Systems Lab, Strategic Education Initiatives, Office of Digital Learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. YJ’s research centers on the design and development of learning and assessment in technology-rich environments, particularly video games and simulations. She also has been working closely with teachers co-designing curricula that incorporate emerging technologies within STEM domains for the purpose of supporting “21st Century Skills” such as systems thinking and science inquiry.
